The Serotonin Anvil is the music/sound art of Whitney Leary who started out his career in music "mixmashing" other artists music starting in about 1997. The process involved chopping up other artists songs in primitive wave programs on a hand me down PC. Then attempting to do a remix of the songs using cheap effects and simple chops of sound he made. In 2004 Whitney set about to make "real" music, he took a digital audio class at Utah State University, got himself some better software (FL Studio) and went to work pretty much blindly not knowing anything about music. Whitney learned about soft-synths, samplers, types of effects, and other assorted things that he need to to get his work to progress. He made an album of his early works called "Outsider Music", feeling much like an outsider to what music was supposed to be. The music on this album was beat driven and influenced by several different sub genres of electronic music. Over the next few years Whitney continued to make music, still beat driven but moving towards a some what progressive rock influence. His song called "Return To The Machine" which had three separate parts to the same song was his first best attempt at a progressive feel. That with other sonic experiments, some still beat driven, some more ambient, were collected into an album that is called "Cosmic Wilderness". From 2007 to 2008 Whitney started working with a more ambient music structure that was inclusive of guitar work with a virtual computer based tone set up. This started with using Line 6 hardware/software, then moved to using a mix of Line 6 software and Native Instruments "Guitar Rig". Whitney worked on doing improvisational ambient pieces that had a programed underlying framework that he could then improvise over. Whitney worked allot with a series of extended delays that morphed and created sound scapeish textures. He was largely influenced by Robert Fripp and other ambient guitarists during this time. TSA made some more music for a VST instrument competition for the "Omnisphere" soft-synth, again working toward a progressive structured song. That project collected with some ambient improvisational songs made up the album "Omniverse". The Serotonin Anvil started releasing music under the Creative Commons Licencing in 2009 hoping to gain a larger following by making the music free to download. TSA continues now with the hopes of working on more ways of incorporating structured progressive music and intertwining improvisational ambient playing. The Serotonin Anvil would like to start doing live performances and possibly work with other people in the future.
